7 Ways Becoming a Virtual Assistant Changed My Entire Life
I thought I was just looking for remote work, but what I found was a way out of everything that was making me miserable.
Me, travelling through Germany, after working from my laptop in my hostel.
Before I quit my job, I used to spend my lunch breaks sitting in my car, googling “how to make money online.”
But not because I wanted to become some six-figure boss babe. I just wanted to stop feeling trapped in my 9-5.
I wanted to make good money without wasting my twenties under fluorescent lights.
I wanted to travel while I was still young enough to say yes to everything.
I wanted to stop asking permission to live my own life.
What I didn’t realize then was that becoming a virtual assistant wouldn’t just give me freedom… it would change every single thing about how I live, work, and even see myself.
Here’s what I mean.
1. I Can Work From Anywhere (and I mean anywhere)
Beach town in Portugal? Been there.
Cabin in the Rockies? Done that.
My cozy kitchen table with a candle burning and lo-fi in the background? Honestly, most days.
The freedom to work from anywhere is the reason I started, but it’s still the thing that blows my mind years later.
No more fake smiles in office kitchens. No more soul-sucking commutes. No more being chained to one place just because my paycheck said so.
If there’s Wi-Fi, I’m set.
2. I Make More Than I Ever Did at My 9–5
When I first started freelancing, I just wanted to make a little side income to save up for vacations. Then I replaced my 9-5 salary. Then I doubled it. Then I tripled it.
Once I learned how to package my skills and find aligned clients, I realized something: I didn’t need to climb any corporate ladder to build wealth.
(Which is wild since I was “just” a virtual assistant. Nothing fancy.)
Every dollar I make now is a direct reflection of my effort, not some manager’s opinion on what I’m worth or a company’s “budget constraints.”
3. I Finally Realized I Wasn’t Lazy
I used to think something was wrong with me. I couldn’t sit still in an office for eight hours. My energy came in waves. My creativity disappeared under pressure.
Now I know that I wasn’t lazy. I was misaligned.
I don’t force myself into the 9–5 rhythm anymore. I work when I’m focused, rest when I need to, and actually get more done in half the time.
THAT’s the productivity hack no one talks about… designing your work around your energy.
4. I Actually Travel, Not Just Dream About It
I used to scroll Instagram during my 15-minute breaks, saving photos of places I thought I’d never see.
Now I’m that person working from hotel lobbies, hiking new trails in the middle of the week, and working on spreadsheets from random coffee shops that smell like cinnamon and ambition.
Travel doesn’t have to be a vacation anymore. It’s part of my life.
5. I Can Take Days Off Without Asking Permission
Some weeks I work a lot. Some weeks, I don’t.
If I’m sick, I rest. If I need space, I take it. If it’s Wednesday and I randomly decide I deserve a spa day, no one’s stopping me.
I also don’t need to perform productivity. I don’t have to look busy to prove my worth. My clients KNOW my worth because it shows in the work I hand in, not on how many hours it takes me to do it.
Rest isn’t something I have to earn anymore. It’s part of the rhythm that keeps me creative, clear, and grounded.
6. I Get to Create My Own Version of “Balance”
I haven’t set an alarm in 9 years (except when I’m catching a flight).
Some mornings I’m up early and deep in creative flow. Other days, I start slow and don’t touch my laptop until 11.
I build my work around my life, instead of the other way around.
There’s no one tracking my hours, no passive-aggressive “circling back” emails. Just me, my to-do list, clients I genuinely love working for, and the freedom to do things my way.
7. I Don’t Wait for Permission Anymore
Becoming a freelancer and a virtual assistant didn’t just change how I make money, it changed who I am.
I learned how to make decisions without overexplaining them.
How to choose clients who respect me.
How to say no when something doesn’t feel right.
You stop shrinking when you build something that’s yours. You stop waiting for someone to give you a raise, approve your time off, or validate your potential.
You realize you were never asking for freedom, you were just asking for control over your own life.
